Remote ink-based notarization (RIN)
Bridging traditional and online notarization with the Astrean RIN app
Overview of the RIN process
How "wet signature" remote online notarization works
Although this can be waived if the signer is "personally known" to the notary, this consists of two steps: (1) validating the ID documents being provided; and (2) verifying that the person is one on the ID.
Astrean uses a third-party database to validate IDs from every state and over 100 countries. We also verify actual identities using dynamic knowledge-based authentication (KBA).
Record notarial event
The signing and notarization must be recorded; and the audio-video recording of the notarization then must be saved for 5-10 years, depending on the state. Depending on the state, parties may also need to state their locations on record.
The last party to receive and sign the document is the notary. Once physically notarized, the official document is sent to the relevant customers.
While a manually ink-signed and traditionally stamped original document is required, notaries can digitized the documents to provide an electronic record of the notarization.
If allowed by their state, notaries can also issue an electronic notarization even while waiting for the official copy. This electronic notarization can provide interim confirmation of the notarial event.
Combining RON with traditional "wet" signatures
Astrean facilitates RIN's hybrid remote & manual notarizations
Many states that have legalized remote online notarizations, removing the requirement that notaries and their clients have to be face-to-face in the same room. But some states still require “wet signatures” on all remotely notarized documents – notarized in those states.
So while notaries and their clients can now enjoy the convenience of conducting notarial events remotely, they must still ensure that (1) all documents are manually signed with ink and (2) the notarial seal is manually applied with the traditional notary seal.
In addition to providing the required audio-video component for RINs, Astrean removes much of the hassles by providing digital tools to complement the needed wok flows for valid RIN.
Designed for notaries, by notaries
Power tools to create notary super performers
Ready for remote ink-based notarization?
Start with your state's RON regulations & requirements
The Astrean suite of notary business and digital tools are available for use by notaries in every state and nation. However, that is not the case with the RON tool in the Astrean notary toolbox.
Not all states currently allow their notaries to conduct RON transactions. Most do, but not quite all — yet.
Interestingly, while some states prohibit their notaries from conducting RON transactions, those same states must recognize RON certifications from other states that do allow RONs.
To better assist our users, Astrean monitors state laws and regulations. If you’re ready to RON, you can review your state regulations and requirements in our library of state RON guidelines.

Modernizing notarial security and privacy
Big improvements in fraud prevention for notarization
It’s true that notary fraud is rare. But let’s be honest. Traditional notarization has not kept up with the all the modern security precautions used by the financial industry and generally expected by our modern economy.
Notarization can do so much to enhance trust and combat fraud in our business, legal and government. But it has been unable to step up to the plate – until now. Today’s technology can make notarization even more secure and trustworthy. And Astrean’s solution takes it even further:
- Verified notaries. Only notaries with valid commissions and licenses are allowed.
- Signer ID validation. We electronically ensure that signer ID docs are legit.
- Signer ID verification. We use dynamic knowledge-based authentication (KBA) to verify each signer’s actual identity.
- Encrypted data. All data is encrypted in transit using secure socket layers (SSL) and at rest.
- Blockchain-enabled. This supporting technology helps ensure that confirmed records are immutable (cannot be altered later).

Introducing the Astrean "Uber for Notaries" marketplace
Having a Pro, Premium or Platinum tier subscription allows notaries to apply to be part of the Astrean Notary Marketplace – our “Uber for Notaries” platform connecting online notary customers with our notaries.
In addition to individuals searching online for notaries, we also actively recommend our premium notaries to our enterprise clients who need additional support. These enterprise clients are large corporations and very busy title companies with their own internal notary team.
But they often run into times when they need help from seasoned notaries outside their company.
We select and train only qualified notaries to be part of this marketplace. If you’re interested in becoming a notary and/or part of the Astrean Notary Marketplace, click here to learn more.
